Soul Sisters: The Beyoncé Edition

Soul Sisters: The Beyoncé Edition

Soul Sister: A kindred spirit; A woman whose thoughts, feelings & attitudes closely match those of another…

It was not long before I realized I found this in to my Muchacha-Chan AKA Shake A Tail Feather…

Words can’t even describe how much this woman means to me (At least…not with my limited, flawed-ass lexicon anyway.) I’ve literally known this girl since she was inside she mama womb. And our mothers (who for some reason seem to be “undercover” besties by the way) had actually done a really great job of cultivating this sisterly bond between us throughout our childhood with countless sleepovers, holiday get togethers, vacations/staycations and so on & so forth.

Now while I do love my actual siblings very much so, we did grow up in separate households. I am my mothers only child and was raised as such. The opportunity to meet my siblings in person hadn’t come up until I was about 12 or 13 years old. Before that we had only spoken to each other on the phone a couple of times. So much of my childhood was spent trying to figure out how to not feel so damn lonely all the time. And anytime spent visiting with my cousin/Soul Sister was the highlight of the season, or sometimes even the year, for me. So I’m particularly grateful that I had someone like Shake A Tail Feather to grow up with the way that we did. And hopefully she feels the same about me.

That’s not to say that everything between us has always been perfect. Every now and then we’ve had to wade through periods of distance in our friendship, both physically (with regards to proximity) and emotionally. But in spite of all that, there’s an underlying understanding that we’ll always love and have each other’s back no matter what. And I think that our relationship now, as adults, is stronger than it’s ever been.

We’ve gotten each other through some really interesting times: terrible jobs, loss of friendships, dumb ass situationships, homelessness. Yes…there was a time when she and I were both homeless at the same damn time.

We’ve celebrated birthdays, graduations, housewarmings and promotions together. And…Shake A Tail Feather was the sole reason I was even able to make it upstate to my homegirls wedding last summer.

(And quiet as it’s kept…This wedding in particular was very important to me because for one; THIS bride was the very first friend I had ever made at Syracuse University. And two; THIS homegirl was also the only one of my now married friends who even thought to send me an invitation to her special day. So there was NO way I was missing out on that! But you ain’t heard that from me…)

Shake A Tail Feather has gifted me my first puppy, Huey; who is now like my other half since we’re virtually inseparable.

And last but definitely not least, she took us to see the queen: Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter.

So Boom, Check It; I’m lounging in my home one random September evening, minding my business when I suddenly get a text from Shake A Tail Feather. It was a screenshot of her ticket purchase with the caption: Be Ready!!! I said to myself “I know this child ain’t done bought us some BeyHive row seats for the last stop on the Formation World Tour!!!”

So we went, got our whole entire lives, and afterwards, was left with the same feeling that the cast of New Girl felt at the end of their Prince episode, “Did that…just happen? Where do we go from here…?”

XoXo
